Guide to Soclal Media

"I'm a professional engineer - I don’t want to be a bloody influencer!"

If the idea of posting on LinkedIn makes you cringe a little, you’re not alone

Most engineers I know didn’t sign up for this ‘personal brand’ stuff… they just want to be good at what they do

But posting on LinkedIn isn’t about chasing Likes

It’s about showing up as the expert you already are and helping real people solve real problems

Quietly becoming THE person they trust when they need help

Here's a little 'Engineer’s Guide to Social Media'

🔶 Why post at all?

Because your knowledge is invaluable

Your customers, colleagues, and future opportunities are out there struggling with challenges you could make simpler

Posting helps you:

- Build trust
- Share insights
- Stay top-of-mind when people need what only you can do.

You don’t need to be loud or flashy
You just need to be helpful

🔶 Simple framework for content

When you post, think about these 3 goals:

1. Engage

Start real conversations

- Share a story from a recent project
- Ask your network for opinions (polls work nicely)
- Talk about a time you made a mistake and what you learned

2. Educate

Make life easier for others

- Explain something complex in simple terms
- Share a quick 'how-to' from a problem you solved
- Offer practical tips you wish someone had told you earlier

3. Entice

Invite the next step

- Mention an event you’re going to
- Offer a resource or tool your audience can use
- Share a customer success story that makes others think,
"Maybe they could help me too."

🔶 Not sure what to post?

Here’s an easy way to get going:

- Record a 60-second video answering a real customer question
- Write a short story about a win (or a lesson) from your week
- Post a quick question asking for advice or input from your peers

No filters
No perfect lighting
No fake guru energy

Just you - being helpful

You don’t need to be an influencer

You just need to make an impact - that’s way more powerful

If you posted one helpful tip on LinkedIn this week... what would it be about?
