Are you selling confidence?
Aug 14, 2026
I've often wondered how quickly customers make their minds up about us
Not the product
Us
Sometimes two sales conversations can cover very similar ground
The same solution
The same capability
The same technical discussion
And yet they feel completely different
Customers can usually sense it
The difference between somebody trying to flog them something...
... and somebody trying to help them make a good decision.
One conversation feels transactional whilst the other feels collaborative
That can be a subtle distinction
But in complex engineering environments, it seems to matter a lot
It matters because customers are evaluating more than products
They're evaluating:
- Trust
- Confidence
- Risk
They are figuring out whether they can work with you
Whether they WANT to work with you
I've noticed that the strongest sales conversations rarely feel like a pitch
They feel more like two people making sense of something together
Structure helps. One the VALUE Framework gives
🔸 Validate = right opportunities
Make sure there's a genuine reason to explore the conversation in the first place
🔸 Align = right research
Understand the customer's world before introducing your own
🔸 Leverage = right conversations
Ask questions that create thinking, not just answers
🔸 Underpin = right solutions
Position solutions in the context of the decision being made
🔸 Evolve = right outcomes
Stay focused on helping the customer achieve what they set out to achieve
Perhaps that's why collaborative conversations tend to work so well
Customers aren't just choosing a solution... they're choosing how confident they feel about the decision
How are you instilling that confidence?
(Curiousity helps... be more cat)
